For fly fishing guide trips in Wales I am able to help you enjoy fishing for trout, in both river and lake. All tackle can be provided, including suitable fly rods, reels, waders, nets and flies for a wide range of water types. I can also provide a hearty shore lunch and a pick up and drop off service in most instances.
I am the only fly fishing guide based in the Capitol City of Wales, Cardiff, in South East Wales, where we are truly blessed with quality trout rivers and streams, such as the Taff, Usk and Wye, all of which are within easy reach. In these rivers wild brown trout can grow to trophy sizes, fish from 15 to 20 inches or more are common.
Smaller streams and rivers can also provide excellent sport, for example the Sirhowy, Rhymney and the tributaries of the Wye, such as the Edw and Monnow, plus the many ‘wild streams’ of the Brecon Beacons. These waters offer prolific numbers of trout, with the occasional trophy.
As well as trout, I offer guiding for grayling, which are abundant in several rivers in South Wales. These can be fished for through the winter. I can help you catch your first grayling, should you wish to pursue the ‘lady of the stream’. These
stunning fish can reach over 50cm in our local waters.
I am also very passionate about wild Welsh hill lakes – ‘llyns’ – as they are sometimes known. On those, I wrote a book called ‘Wild Lakes Of Wales‘ with my good friend Alan Parfitt. Lake fishing trips can include the reservoirs of the Brecon Beacons, which are within 45 minute drive from Cardiff, to the rugged Teifi Pools and the wilderness lakes of the Cambrian Mountains.
As well as guiding you on the best rivers in Wales, I can teach you new techniques; for example Euro Nymphing, ‘the duo’ and streamer fishing, methods that will help you improve your fishing skills and catch rates immensely.
Tariff:
Prices start from £200 per trip, for a full day on the water with lunch and equipment supplied. Each trip is tailored, so rates may vary according to distance, location, numbers of anglers and requirements.
Please note, I am a guide, rather than an instructor, so do not cater for out and out beginners, so some fly fishing experience will be required.
I am fully insured with the Angling Trust and hold their Level 2 Licenced Angling Coach qualification.

Terms & Conditions
Once a date(s) is agreed and confirmed, I will save the date for you. There is no need for a deposit.
Payment is to be made on the day of fishing, usually at the end of the session.
I reserve the right to cancel a session within a fair notice period, based on unfavourable local conditions. For example, a dangerous flood event or ongoing high water temperatures, where fish welfare becomes a concern. Thankfully in Wales this is rare, due to our sheer variety of venues and mild climate!
Your safety is my highest priority. By booking a guided session with Ceri Thomas Fly Fishing In Wales Guiding, you agree to follow safety instructions provided by your guide. Wearing a cap and sunglasses for eye protection is necessary at all times.
Please inform me of any mobility issues, medical conditions, food allergies or physical limitations at least several days prior to the session, so I can plan accordingly.
I reserve the right to end a session early, if safety instructions are ignored or if behaviour when fishing is deemed unsafe.
Equipment rental & fair use
I can loan high-quality complete fly fishing outfits, nets, waders (subject to size availability) and associated flies and tippet for no extra cost – for your use during our trip.
This ensures you will have reliable equipment that is perfect for the conditions, target species and venue. Let me know your equipment requirements in advance of your trip.
Normal wear and tear is an expected part of fly fishing and lost flies, tippet or minor cosmetic marks on equipment are fully covered as part of the guiding experience.
However, all rented equipment remains valuable and must be treated with care. If any item is broken or damaged as a result of negligence or misuse (for example stepping on a rod, trapping it in a car door, or carelessly dropping a reel onto rocks), then a charge will apply.
The fee will reflect a fair and reasonable ‘cost price’ of repairing the item or replacing it.
Licences and permits:
Cost of permits and day tickets are not included in any quoted prices, however I will help arrange these for you, or offer instructions on how to obtain them.
Additionally, in Wales and England a Government ‘freshwater rod licence’ is required. It is your responsibility to possess a valid rod licence before fishing, which you can purchase here.
Insurance:
I hold full professional public liability insurance with The Angling Trust as a licenced level 2 coach. Additionally, when you are fishing a private water under a valid ‘day ticket’ you will be covered by the venue owners 3rd party liability insurance.
However, it is recommended for you to have your own personal accident and travel insurance in place, for the duration of the trip.
limitation of liability: Ceri Thomas / Fly Fishing In Wales Guiding cannot be held liable for any personal injury, illness, or loss/damage to your property (such as phones, cameras or glasses) during the trip, except where such loss or injury is caused by our proven negligence.
I look forward to helping you discover the wonderful waters of Wales!
